The Wonderful Shameless Self Promotion… or not

I very often see blog posts that read "Shameless Self Promotion" followed by a small blurb about their new product or their new book. I never understand why so many people say this. I get blog posts daily related to self promotion and more than ¾ of them are start with the words "a bit of Shameless Self Promotion". What's going on?

Are you afraid of promoting yourself? Do you think people will recent you or block you in some mental or unconscious way?

Maybe I can change your mind on what Self Promotion is and why it is never shameless. You see, self promotion is an impulse that started with survival, with a primal instinct of self preservation. Soon after it turned into a social skill that also required helping others to survive and strive in society in order to have more people helping each other and, yes, helping you. This was the beginning of self promotion and it evolved into what we have now. Here is a short and informative video about how it all started.

Now, you also have to remember that if you have a good product or a good service and people will benefit from it there is no shame in promoting it. After all, you are providing a solution.

Thanks,

Jorge

I just borrowed the term from my spouse who defines the "shameless self-promo" separately from other promotional and marketing as one that is blatant, candid and without subtlety.

In any event - Thanks for your perspective!
